Comic strips # 1

Fantastic Four comic strip. First he apologizes by saying he's going to buy her a whole new wardrobe; then he cuts her line stating "wives should be kissed - and not heard!" That's the way to go, super hero!

Banda desenhada do Quarteto Fantástico.

What men want

Palmolive soap wisely reminds the ladies: "Men ask Is she pretty?... NOT Is she clever?"

Nothing changed, ladies. They ask that alright. In fact, that is ALL they ask. If, by chance. you are unluckily cleverer than they, hide that fact carefully. They will be outraged and angry at you for the fact. If you are pretty, don't consider yourself gifted unless you are also dumb.

O sabonete Palmolive relembra gentilmente as senhoras : "Os homens perguntam: Ela é bonita? ... E não Ela é inteligente?"

Nada mudou, senhoras.

Classy Lady

A "CLASSY" LADY

More important for a woman than being pretty or having lots of elegant dresses is to be "classy". Here it is how "class" can be defined:

- to dress well, but with no eccentricity, with natural elegance (not "sought")
- to use only a few jewels, valuable ones and not "trinkets" (the value can be artistic or intrinsic)
- to be decent without proud. to have a pleasant voice and never raise it in quarrels.
-  to avoid being flaunt about the foreign languages you know - but know some
- to avoid being demanding or "difficult" in hotels or restaurants
- to know how to adapt. to avoid seeking impossible things
- to keep your house presentable, which reveals your upbringing
- to know how to superintend and to be obeyed without being heavy. get everything from other people's willingness
- to always know exactly what to want, ordering with exactitude, and to value everything you like
- naturally, there is not any 100% "classy" woman. to be satisfied with 70% is a requisite

One remarkable thing in this is how subjective and ethereal are the concepts used here. So volatile are them that sometimes they needed to use "inverted commas".

Another remarkable thing is the difficulty level of some steps: I think it is easier for a woman to be a "classy" lady than to know exactly what she wants (unless the only thing she wants is to be a "classy" lady, which is pretty common and solves the question).

It is also very unfair for a "classy" lady to know several languages without flaunting that. What's the use of this? To read foreign books home alone? That's not "classy"!!!

And last but not (at all) least: if you're happy with being 70% classy, you can be 100% classy? This is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Let's see my case: we have here 10 steps to be a "classy" lady, each one meaning 10%, I guess. The only step I reached is the one about restaurants and hotels, so I am 10% classy. Now I wonder if I can improve myself being happy with my 10%, and how much can I improve in that case. Cross-multiplying this: if being happy with 70% gives me 30 extra-points, being happy with 10% must give me more 4,29%, meaning that in fact I am 14,29% "classy". I am EVEN MORE satisfied with that result! Does that mean... ? (and so on)

-----------

? (e por aí adiante)

Reading the male mind

What all women wish to know: what men want. Fortunately, Crosse and Blackwell has found out the secret and shared it with us - what men think about and wish for all the time is French style onion soup.

Women: know your limits!

Mulheres: conheçam os vossos limites!

A BBC comedy...

Please... let your wife come into the living room!

There were gentle caring ads like this one as well. Husbands, buy your wives a washing machine. This way, she can also join the rest of the family. She may even be admitted into the living room, a place she only knows because she goes there to sweep and dust. Be a good husband - buy her a Hotpoint for X-mas.

For extra fun... take more than one!

I always wonder if they mean the women or the cans of Coke...

Speaking of misses...

"Miss" Turkey, from the land of good tobacco,

It may be the land of good tobacco, but when it comes to girls...

The ideal wife

Imagine a wife contest. How do you think should be an ideal wife? Pretty? Industrious? A good cook? How about the sum of all this and much more, like sewing well in a machine and make good cocktails? Why on earth there were contests for wifes? We can understand that a miss contest, for example, is very useful and a delight for both male and female gender. But what is the utility of an another man's wife contest? To know who is the most lucky man of the country? No. The purpose of this contest "is just to honor the image of the portuguese wife and her merits and her know-how". Were portuguese men too focused on foreign women in the 70's? Or this is just an attempt to fix some foreign grooms in the country? Anyway the winner woud go to Jugoslavia to represent Portugal in an European version of the same contest. This charming lady in the pictures above is the 1973's ideal wife, and a perfect example of a woman "who knows her value and who understands that the constant actualization she needs does not invalidate the most important values for any woman: be a Spouse and a Mother". Two town-hall presidents, the general director of turism and the director of the national tv station where in the ceremony in what seems to be a vicious act of pure voyeurism.

Womanly offense leads to intimate neglect... and so it should! :)

These two ads focus on the very same subject as our previous post: feminine hygiene. As you see, caring husbands felt so nauseated by the terrible "woman odour" - "worse than body odour or bad breath!" that they left their wives home alone or, worse, shut themselves in a room, leaving the poor ignorant wives kept away from male partners in their own homes. Because, as we all know, after a woman looses her virginity she must wash her private parts non stop - the "usage" just gives her a foul smell, "noticeable to everyone but herself". As for men, they keep on smelling like roses. That's why they don't even bother to clean after using the toilet facilities.

For Married Folks Only

Só para casadas

Porque anda ele a escrever a outra mulher?

I wonder how will I translate this awkward oddity to portuguese... We already knew that any advertising could be naughty, deceitful, cruel, explicit or "educative". What we didn't know is that even in the 50's we could already find all this adjectives in just one advertisement.

PS - Apparently single folks didn't have to care about their disinfection ... :S

"Is it always illegal to kill a woman?"

That's the question made by this Pitney-Bowes Postage Meter Ad. As the text column on the side of the ad explains, Mr. Jones bought a postage meter for his office. Red haired and airy headed Ms. Morrisey refuses to use the thing because she is not "mechanically inclined". Though good natured business man Jones explains the advantages of basic technology, Ms. Morrisey claims it is far too difficult for her to understand how to work with a postage meter... Two weeks later, Mr. Jones finds Ms. Morrisey has put a romantic pink ribbon on her new work tool. She has got the handle of it! And loves the little thing. Lovely and dumb Ms. Morrisey, assuming her full role as a personal assistant, says she is soooo glad Mr. Jones got the meter because now she has much more free time to go to the ladies room and "catch up with all the dirt!" Mr. Jones, ever patient boss, wonders about strangling her pretty neck.

They will prefer you on "Marie-Claire" style

Eles vão preferi-la no estilo "Marie-Claire" (Maria Clara)

I want you to want me could be the title of this blog, too. Because women want men to want them, magazines want women to buy them and advertisers want you to buy anything they're selling. But the funny thing is that somewhen, somewhere, someone thought that she could help another woman to be no just desirable, but desirable for ever. You know, men like women, dressed or (better) naked, the difficult part for a woman is to catch one man for a lifetime. And fortunately for the french women of the sixties, they had an easy way to do it: the Marie-Claire style. Unfortunately, this outfit worked just for a season, not for a lifetime... (fashion has its tricks).

Women loose love...

Of course, women can only blame themselves if they loose love. They look old. Even worse, they look "middle-age". It doesn't matter, ladies, if your husbands have a fat stomach, no abs showing, incredibly bad posture with shoulders dropping, their hair has fallen and they look like unkept monkeys, their nails are always dirty, and they keep sticking their fingers up their noses. Ladies, if you want to hold on to those great looking middle aged men of yours, look young, by all means! For your sake!

A 35 years old lady grabs the groom of a 19 years old blonde

How? How is this possible? The experience of the elders? No! It's smartness!! She read (see how important it is for a woman to read) some articles about the discovery of a new natural element, the Biocel which is included in the "Tokalon Cream". A bit of Tokalon everyday and that's it, ladies! Remember that he was a rich industry man and that the younger girl was a blonde...
