Have a lump of sugar - it helps your diet!

In the 60's, people believed sugar was the best source of energy. And more over, it helped women to diet because it gave them the willpower to undereat. A spoonfull of sugar was the best a kid could take anytime of day, an ice cream cone before lunch was sure to fill you up, a chocolate bar would work miracles when it came to stopping your voracious appetite. And if you think sugar is fattening... "how do you explain kids are thin?" they said. It just comes to show us that doctors and nutritionists change their mind every time the Earth turns... :)

The top of your face

Another educative advertisement, now that Carla opened the big wonderful box of miraculous cosmetics. I have no comments for this one, it's quite funny, though...

Seventeen Cosmetics

All quiet on the Western front. Men like Lolitas. Lolitas wear make up, but pretend they don't. Upon reaching middle age, women take many years out of their real age. Pretending is an art form. Men say they like what's natural, but there's nothing natural about the cosmetics of flirting. Ask ethologists about it.

Smocks for Maids

"I ask and thank «Flama» magazine for publishing smock models for maids (summer), appropriated to take walks with babies... - Maria Rita Oliveira - Tomar."

Guess what? A super-woman was not only evaluated for her skills at looking good, but she was also supposed to take care of the look of her husband, her kids and... her maids. Magazines helped to decode all etiquette rules they needed to know. Actual super-women still need magazines to keep going...

Gosh, he goes well with my drapes!...

Women's expectations and what it means for women to be successful also changes greatly over the time. In some eras, that may just be the equivalent to finding a man so handsome he would fit perfectly with the decor of our dream home... :)))

Clear you head the modern way

Delicious freshness while you inhale...

We all can wonder if this inhaler is in any way related with the tampon we've showed two posts ago...   Anyway is funny to find how many advertisings are educative and informative. Advertisers teach us how to smell good, how to look good, how to feel good, how to be attractive for women, attractive for men, how to be, if not better than anyone else, at least LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

Show her it's a man's world!

In 1951, men wearing Van Heusen ties were not only more successful at the office. They also had the bonus of having breakfast in bed served in a tray by a wife so fascinated and submissive that she stood on her knees, hardly daring to raise her eyes to face her master's. Domineering and arrogant Van Heusen males stretched out with pleasure at such a site despite the wrinkles their attitude might cause on their impeccable outfits.

Easy to use

Dear male readers, we wish you'll keep coming to this blog after knowing that we have a pretty nice collection of vintage menstruation's stuff. Like this one. Quite audacious to show a tampon in close-up (at this time, they used to be much more subtle), they needed to do so for us to understand this magic ergonomic invention. To keep the pudency, the girl is hiding behind the cardboard...

The delight of knitting for him

Knitted by you... that's tenderness for him!

Everyone knows that a perfect wife knows how to do a lot of things. From cooking to knitting, she does everything with HIM in her mind. This advertisement recommends the best male wool but it's female oriented... because to knit it's not more expensive than buying a ready-made.  Better spend your time than his money!

If your husband ever finds out...

1952 Chase & Sanborn Coffee Ad - "if he discovers you're still taking chances on getting stale coffee... woe unto you! For today there's a sure way to test for freshness before you buy!"

This ad could easily be taken for irony if the lady didn't look so utterly delighted about being spanked. The patronizing husband exerts his duty of education about the stale coffee by chastising his private misbehaved  school girl: his wife, of course.

Good News for Aldinha

- Good news, Aldinha! By 1995, whole housekeeping will be automatized!

Don't freak out, Aldinha, that's not true. Well, they invented mops, but little more than that...

Não desesperes, Aldinha, não é verdade. Bom, inventaram as esfregonas, mas pouco mais...

The Queens of History would envy Susan Smith

As rainhas históricas teriam inveja da Susan Smith...

Well, perhaps the maids of the queens of history would envy Susan Smith's complete kitchen...

Don't worry, darling, you didn't burn the beer!

This is a 1952 Schlitz beer ad which shows us how loving and understanding husbands were in those days. Despite the wife's shameful neglect of her role as a housewife that resulted in her completely burning the dinner, the husband still comforts her kindly. After all, he still has the good ol' Schlitz beer! :) The wife - apparently still unaware of what a bottle of Schlitz can do to rise up spirits - is in tears, heartbroken by the failure of duty.

Afinal, ainda lhe resta a boa cerveja Schlitz!

He'll love you in these!

The name of the blog comes from this advertising. I wonder if she was pretty enough when she was working on the apron...

O nome do blogue nasceu deste anúncio.

Pretty while you work

Two girls who worked together in a newspaper and barely knew each other found out at a party one night that they were both fascinated by their grandmothers' magazines, that is to say by that time in History in which women were schizophrenically perfect at the eyes of society and whithin the context of their time. One of the girls, appropriately named Aurora (=Dawn), thus leading to a new beggining, thought it would be fun to put on the internet what they both had been collecting over the time. Pretty while you work does not intend to be an academic essay online about women's condition over the ages; it's only our bit of fun for those who wish to explore it with us.
